Discovering the Elegance of AUBE Toranomon: A Modern Marvel in Residential Architecture

The AUBE Toranomon Residential Building in Minato City, Tokyo, exemplifies the innovative use of glass in modern architecture. Designed by the esteemed architectural firm ETHNOS and completed in 2022, this building highlights the elegance and functionality of contemporary design, fostering a harmonious connection between residents and the city.

Architectural Design

AUBE Toranomon stands out with its sleek, modern design, utilizing expansive glass panels that enhance its aesthetic appeal and allow natural light to flood the interiors. The transparent façade creates a bright and welcoming atmosphere, emphasizing openness and connectivity with the urban surroundings. The lead architect, Tatehito Sakurai, has masterfully blended form and function to create a structure that is both visually stunning and highly functional.

Urban Integration and Lifestyle Adaptation

Situated in a rapidly evolving area of downtown Tokyo, AUBE Toranomon is surrounded by both high-rises and lower buildings, embodying a blend of old and new. The design accommodates various lifestyles, fostering a social connection between the residents and the city. The project began before the COVID-19 pandemic, but its design has proven adaptable to new lifestyle changes, such as increased remote work. Rental commercial spaces, branded “ESCALIER,” provide a balanced working environment, enhancing economic efficiency and neighborhood connectivity.

Interior Layout and Flexibility

The interior spaces are designed with a focus on fluidity and openness. Large windows offer panoramic views of Tokyo, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor environments. Glass partitions and railings within the building further enhance the sense of spaciousness and continuity. With an area of 630 m², the building provides ample space for luxurious living. Each unit in the building clearly divides public and private spaces, offering flexibility to meet individual tenant needs. The building comprises three types of duplex apartments, with entrances strategically placed to maximize privacy and functionality.

Sustainable Features

AUBE Toranomon incorporates several sustainable elements. Energy-efficient glass, manufactured by Fuji Sash, helps regulate indoor temperatures, reducing reliance on artificial heating and cooling. The inclusion of green roofs and solar panels contributes to the building’s overall sustainability and energy efficiency, reflecting a commitment to environmentally conscious design.

Amenities and Communal Spaces

The building provides a range of amenities aimed at enhancing the quality of life for its residents. These include a state-of-the-art fitness center, communal lounges, and a rooftop garden. The extensive use of glass in communal areas ensures these spaces are well-lit and inviting, fostering a sense of community and well-being. A common space on the third floor, accessible via stairs or elevator along the atrium, provides light and ventilation to the apartments. The structural wall running from the basement to the second floor serves as a crucial partition, while integrated beams and flat pre-stressed concrete beams maintain interior aesthetics.

Innovative Structural Design

The building’s design incorporates a wall-type frame structure, preventing interior protrusions and maximizing usable space. Despite ceiling height restrictions due to shade regulations, the design cleverly integrates beams into the walls, maintaining a seamless and open interior. The building’s frontage is divided into three units, with thoughtful adjustments made for emergency evacuation spaces and sky factor regulations. Sash-less curtain walls on the second and fourth floors highlight the building’s volume and blend harmoniously with the urban skyline.

AUBE Toranomon Residential Building is a prime example of the innovative use of glass in modern architecture. Designed by ETHNOS and led by Tatehito Sakurai, its design offers aesthetic and functional benefits while adhering to sustainable building practices. This project not only realizes a rich living environment but also connects residents to society, embodying a modern, adaptable lifestyle within the heart of Tokyo. AUBE Toranomon stands as a noteworthy project in contemporary residential architecture, showcasing the potential of glass as a primary construction material.
